Postpartum Doula Support

Care for the Fourth Trimester

Postpartum support is undeniably linked to greater health outcomes for both mama and baby – increased rates of healing, lower mental health risks, deeper bonding, better sleep, improved relationships (the list goes on).... Whatever your healing preferences, our postpartum doulas are well-versed in Western standards, Ayurvedic approaches, as well as both traditional Mexican and traditional Chinese nutrition practices.

We’ll be in your corner from the moment you reach out, to the moment you say,

8 Weeks of Compassionate Care

Many of us know “what to expect when we’re expecting.” But the vast majority of our first-time families have no idea what happens after!

The cultural lack of visibility into the postpartum journey is, honestly, pretty sad. Keep in mind that your experience will be as unique as you and your baby, but here’s some typical ways we might focus 8-week postpartum support:

"I could not have gotten through that time without the support and grace of Marlene"

We live far away from family, had two small toddlers and a newborn, my husband didn’t get to take off much work and I knew postpartum I wanted to set myself up for success. I looked forward to the days [my postpartum doula] came and not only did she help with the physical needs of postpartum- sleep, food, toddlers, laundry etc. She supported me emotionally too...I could not have gotten through that time without the support and grace of Marlene. She is kind, loving and hard working.”

"Best newborn care  and first hand knowledge..."

" Marlene stepped into our lives and made sure we were taken care of"

“Marlene was the best thing that could have happened for our family. As first time parents with no family located close by, my husband and I were a little clueless on everything. Marlene stepped into our lives and made sure we were taken care of…Marlene taught us so many things about being parents like breastfeeding, showed us how to swaddle, taught us how to give our little man a bath, taught about pace feeding and bottles, and so many other things. She gave me so many recommendations and resources to help me on my first time mom journey. I would have been lost without her. I truly feel that she helped me stay positive during the most vulnerable weeks of my postpartum. She was there to talk to about anything and everything and made my husband and I feel super comfortable. She encouraged us to nap and take time for ourselves. I have never felt more safe than I did with Marlene. I never once worried about my son when he was in her care because I know she cares for each of her babies like they are her own. I am beyond thankful to have worked with Marlene and my entire family is lucky to have her in our lives.”

" It felt like we had a postpartum secret weapon"

“Hannah made what was one of the most intense and anxious times of our lives filled with peace. Every time she came to care for our family, we had an instant sense of relief. The rest we were able to get because of her was life giving. She has such a calming presence, and she anticipated our needs sometimes before we even knew them! She was so knowledgeable about breastfeeding and all things baby care. It felt like we had a postpartum secret weapon!”

"You can’t put a price tag on the peace of mind a postpartum doula provides"

One of the greatest gifts as new parents was Hannah as a postpartum doula! We knew going into this new season of parenthood would pose some unique challenges so having a village to support us was essential and we could not have asked for someone better than Hannah! We truly view Hannah as an extension of our family and felt our daughter was in the most capable hands we deeply trusted - you can’t put a price tag on the peace of mind a postpartum doula provides while getting some much needed rest in the trenches. I 1 million percent recommend the Cherry Blossom Team as a support system to anyone seeking genuine support and care in your postpartum period.”

"It’s something I didn’t know I needed and such weight was lifted off of my shoulders releasing stress I didn’t know I had."

“When I had my last 4 births doula’s & postpartum support were not a thing I knew about 18-12 yrs ago. This birth I knew better and knew to say yes to support after birth. Marlene was amazing with us as our postpartum doula. She has a way about her that is so nurturing & calming to both mom & baby. She came during the day wore my baby while I napped, prepared food and cleaned in her time with us. It’s something I didn’t know I needed and such weight was lifted off of my shoulders releasing stress I didn’t know I had. I can’t wait to see her this week! Thank you Cherry Blossom Team!!!! I highly recommend this beautiful team you won’t regret it”

"  Her presence was so calming and reassuring"

“The mental load that having the support took off of us was so beneficial. Marlene was so kind and helpful and gave us some much needed support and encouragement as first time parents. Hannah was our nighttime doula and is literally the sweetest person ever. I was worried that I’d feel weird having someone in our house watching our baby at night while we slept but she made us so feel comfortable. Her presence was so calming and reassuring.”

"  We worked with Aleta as our postpartum doula and it changed our whole postpartum experience!"

“We worked with Aleta as our postpartum doula and it changed our whole postpartum experience! We were able to have the support we needed multiple times a week and even booked some overnights. The ability to catch up on some sleep, know our little one was safely being watched, and have so much help along the way completely changed our experience. We actually look back on our first couple weeks postpartum with happiness, love, and closeness as a family. Thank you Aleta for supporting this LGBTQ family and making the best vegan postpartum meals!”

Rest is Best. Seriously.

Listen, our fast-paced culture is preoccupied with incessant productivity…and rest is hard. It’s counterintuitive to block out six to eight weeks as sacred time for your body and your baby. But, friend, it’s important.

This isn’t just about dishes, laundry, meals, and tidying (although, leave those tasks to us or someone else for the first few weeks).

Birth is the most physically and emotionally intense magic our bodies can make –it’s life-changing. The weeks after birth have been wisely set aside by indigenous peoples for millennia as a time to replenish mama and bond with baby.
You both need rest:

your soul

after birth

your body

after birth

Odds of postpartum depression or psychosis are lessened by good sleep and support

You’ll need quiet time to fully process your birth experience.

Your instincts may beg to be close, cozy, and nested with your baby.

About 70% of women develop the baby blues, but healthy TLC can ease the effects.

You may work through extra pressure or strain in your intimate relationships due to lack of sleep and the lifestyle change.

You may want to talk with someone outside of your day-to-day support system.

You may have questions at 2am that can’t be answered by a search engine.

You may be anxious, wondering if you’re “succeeding” as a parent. (*hint* you are)

You’ll bleed for a few weeks after birth.

You’ll deliver the placenta and heal the internal wound it leaves (the size of a dinner plate).

Your internal organs will move back where they belong.

Eventually, you’ll embrace easy movement to avoid blood clots.

Your body will heal tears, bruises, or surgery after-effects.

Your pelvic floor will heal.

You may need time to find your rhythm with breastfeeding.

Your body’s nutrients and hormones will need to be replenished.

  • We handpick the right doula for your family. This is not an agency rotation model, where you can never be sure who’s ringing your doorbell from one night to the next. You can count on your doula to build real, lasting relationships with your family.

  • You can trust that each Cherry Blossom doula is caring, compassionate, and highly qualified. We take care of our doulas so they can take care of you. Each of our doulas are fingerprinted and certified.

  • Our intention is to become a “one-stop-shop” for birth and postpartum resources. By offering services like lactation support and meal prep under the Cherry Blossom umbrella, we’re helping more families find the care they need (when they need it…not three weeks later).

  • Unlike a night nanny, overnight nurse, or newborn care specialist, postpartum doulas are caring for you ...not just baby. We’re supporting your body as it heals, providing a sounding board as you process your birth experience, and regularly monitoring your family dynamics and mental health. We know that healthy parents make healthy babies.

For 12+ years, Cherry Blossom has been serving families and empowering real, raw parenthood. Our team has grown by leaps and bounds, but some things remain the same:

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of a postpartum doula compared with a night nurse/nanny?

If you have a strong support system at home (with experienced/supportive friends and family looking out for mama), a night nurse or night nanny is a great way to get restful overnight sleep.  The primary difference between a night nurse and a postpartum doula is that nannies/nurses are there to care for baby. We are here to support mama and baby. Birthing parents have been through the most physically intense transformation the human body can take on – they need a lot of TLC. Statistically, when mama is nurtured and supported, we can expect better health and relationship outcomes for the entire family…your baby included.

Do you guys subscribe to a more holistic/Eastern or traditional/Western approach?

All of our postpartum doulas are certified , and are trained in traditional medicine best practices. Many of our doulas have also adopted Ayurvedic methods, indigenous wisdom, and nutritional recommendations from cultures around the world. Here’s all you need to know: we are here to support you in any way that feels empowering. We will take our cues from your healthcare preferences, and tailor our approach to your comfort.

What if my first postpartum experience was traumatic?

Our doulas understand better than most: postpartum can be an extraordinarily tough time. If your past postpartum experience(s) turned out to be a struggle, you’re in very good company. Between the massive lifestyle shifts, lack of sleep, frequent hormonal tidal waves, dropoff in support, and societal/household pressure to “get back to normal”, it’s no wonder so many parents struggle mentally and emotionally in those precious weeks after birth! Our doulas are a safe confidant for your fears, and will act as a trusted guide in navigating the eerily familiar territory. This time….you’re not alone.

Do you take insurance?

We do! Insurers we partner with include Carrot, Maven, and others.* Contact us to see if our fees would be covered by your particular insurer.  *Most insurers cover six weeks of postpartum doula care. However, we routinely find that clients would prefer eight or even twelve weeks with our doulas, so many families will transition to private pay after the initial six weeks. We are happy to create a custom package for your family’s unique needs – please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Are you guys supportive of BIPOC and LGBTQIA families?

Absolutely. As doulas, we’re aware that BIPOC and LGBTQIA frequently experience adverse outcomes in childbirth and are more likely to face postpartum complications due to inequitable standards of care. We are especially passionate about advocating for, equipping, and empowering families that would otherwise be brushed off or minimized. Every doula on our team is extremely passionate to see every family get the care and support they need; regardless of race, gender, religion, or sexual preference (this really should go without saying). If you have a couple minutes and need a happy cry, check out our birth photography feature in She Knows magazine – dedicated to LGBTQIA parents.

Why do I need to book my postpartum doula care in advance?

Demand for postpartum care has exploded in the last few years – far outpacing our projections. We highly recommend reserving your postpartum experience ASAP, especially if there’s a specific Cherry Blossom doula you’re hoping to book.

In addition, if you think you may need additional care time (above the weeks originally booked), we highly recommend bringing that to your doulas attention at your earliest convenience.

Why 8 weeks of care?

Our standard packages used to cover the typically insured 6 weeks of care (with fertility insurers like Maven and Carrot). But in our decade plus of experience, we found that even though parents are typically “cleared for exercise” by their OB/midwife and told their postpartum is “over,” they still feel sleep deprived, overwhelmed, and not quite healed (especially after cesareans). Six weeks still feels like “the thick of it,” and the majority of our families are begging us to stay longer.

Here’s why the majority of our families choose eight weeks.* At eight weeks:
  • Babies have more predictable routines & parents start to feel more confident
  • Most parents are in a good place physically with their postpartum recovery
  • Babies start to sleep longer stretches around this time
  • Dads/working partners usually go back to the grind around 6 weeks (if they have parental leave) so we’re able to provide extra support if the caretaking parent is alone with baby.

*Many of our families choose to book care past eight weeks (typically twelve weeks or even longer). If you’re craving a little extra time with your doula, please communicate that to them ASAP. We’re happy to build a custom package according to your needs.

How can a daytime doula help?

Many of you might be wondering, “but what does a postpartum doula do?” Your daytime doula can:

  • answer questions about your newborn, your postpartum healing, or anything related to the postpartum transition.
  • hold space as you process your birth experience and provide expert insight
  • care for your baby while you rest, sleep, shower, or enjoy restful self-care activities
  • draw a sitz bath for you
  • help with newborn bathing and nail care
  • restock or organize the nursery
  • support you with grounding techniques such as a hand oil massage, affirmations, or guided meditations
  • help you and your partner navigate the changing relationship dynamics that come with a newborn
  • provide hands-on support with infant or postpartum techniques: baby wraps, pumps, belly binds, etc.
  • guide infant massage and tummy time
  • prepare a nourishing meal or tea (ask about our meal-prepping services!)
  • play with pets or older children in the home so parents can focus on baby
  • pick up groceries
  • provide referrals to additional postpartum resources as needed: lactation consultants, postpartum therapists, pelvic floor PT, etc.

How can an overnight doula help?

Many of you might be wondering, “but what does a postpartum doula do?” Your doula may sleep at your house if the baby is sleeping and the agreed-upon tasks below are completed. A nighttime doula can:

  • give exceptional care to your newborn for the ultimate peace of mind while you sleep.
  • encourage a calm, peaceful environment – honoring your household nighttime dynamics.
  • support your breastfeeding or pumping journey.
  • provide referrals to additional postpartum resources as needed: lactation. consultants, postpartum therapists, pelvic floor PT, etc..
  • help you incorporate safe sleep techniques for your baby.
  • bring snacks or water at night if desired.
  • clean bottles and pump parts.
  • tidy up nursery or living spaces.
  • offer mental health check-ins (anxiety is often higher at night).
  • fold laundry, wash dishes, or prepare breakfast.

What is Ayurvedic care and meal prep?

To quote Childbirth Educator, Simran Adeniji:
“In Ayurveda, a 5000 year old Indian healing tradition, this [postpartum] period is considered a sensitive time for mothers, particularly for the digestive system – hence the strong emphasis on simple, digestible foods. Traditionally, mothers are given hot oil massages daily. They are fed very simple but special foods and a number of herbal drinks to promote healing, boost their immunity and improve milk supply”

The Ayurvedic approach to postpartum care is a way to focus on grounding, healing, and celebrating your body – honoring the incredible work it does. Through gentle nutrition, mindfulness practices, and hands-on care, we can help your energy levels rebalance after birth.
